Paris Celebrates Hollande Victor

In a narrow defeat yesterday of President Nicolas Sarkozy with 51.62 percent of the votes, Francois Hollande became France’s first Socialist head of state in 17 years.

Thousands gathered in Paris to celebrate. Discovery News followed the revelers from the Socialist headquarters behind the Musée d’Orsay, where the crowd waited expectantly to hear the results, to Place de la Bastille — where young and old Hollande voters packed the square. The new President-elect arrived from his city, Tulle, around midnight to speak to his constituency in the capital. French flags as well as those from several other nations were on prominent display. Here Hollande is seen behind the flag for Mali, a former French-controlled territory in West Africa.
